An open letter to my future children

Dearest children,

I swore that I would give you the world in its entirety, and I don’t only mean the physical one. You are the spark that warms me, and I am the light that guides you. I cook you a recipe I had to work on for many years. One that I came-up with to compensate for what I didn’t have, and shield you from what I did.

From the moment you are born I will love you unconditionally. I will be on your side no matter what. I will intently watch you grow and make sure I know exactly how you’re feeling all the time. I will cook you delicious food and push you to be healthy and stay active, because you’ll love yourself, too.

I want to be your role model. I want to be your super hero. I want to be your everything.

You will be mad at me when I take you to music class when you don’t feel like it. You will hate me sometimes when I seem distant while you try to figure out what you did wrong. I won’t be fun all the time, but you will grow up and understand why. You will grow up and love me, and that’s what will keep me going.

I will fight with your father sometimes, but we will work things out because we love you, and we love each other just as much. I will love him, but he will not make me small. He will not silence me. He will never disrespect me.

You will grow up surrounded with love, commitment, understanding, culture, knowledge and creativity. You will have clean faith and know right from wrong. I will prioritise you and your needs, but I will not neglect myself by doing so. I will teach you confidence, self-value and fairness while you watch me and your father grow together. Respecting you and each other. You will be kind, smart and in all ways beautiful. You will fix me.

I want you to know that at a point in my life you gave me hope. I ate healthier, became more positive and took better care of myself just for the chance to one day get to meet you. I will wait patiently until the day I get to teach you everything you want to know, and I will keep working hard so that one day you may introduce me to your children as the one that made you smile.

With all my undying love,

Mom
